Why Stepping Away From My Business Makes Me a Better Leader
As Champagne Co's CEO, I take multiple vacations, staycations, and long weekends every year. The business and my team? Thriving. đź‘Ź
Taking a step back from my business, especially recently while I was on maternity leave, was ironically one of the best things I could have done for it. At first, stepping away felt daunting... it’s hard to let go of something you’ve poured so much into. But my team stepped up, grew their skill sets, and strengthened my confidence in them.
There were a few hiccups along the way that highlighted areas of the business (like some systems and processes) that needed work, things I might not have noticed if I hadn’t taken that step back.
This is clear proof that you don’t have to be in the trenches of your business 24/7 to run a successful business. In fact, if you are always working, you’re not leading — you’re micromanaging.
A great leader knows when to step back. If you’re struggling to give your business some space, this is what you’re missing out on.
Stepping Back Forces Delegation
You can’t do it all. Building a trusted, capable team is non-negotiable.
When you’re backed by a powerhouse team, you have more space to find joy outside of your business and do revenue-focused tasks inside of it.
Stepping Back Shows Where the Cracks Are
Your systems should run smoothly with or without you.
If things are constantly getting missed, it shows you where you need to improve so you can run like a well-oiled machine and retain clients who are happy with your services.
Stepping Back Gives You Clarity
Stepping back and taking time away allows you to look at the big picture.
If you’re buried in tasks, you aren’t giving yourself the capacity to do things that will help you scale.
The Bottom Line
Stepping away isn’t about abandoning your business — it’s about building one that doesn’t crumble in your absence.
When your business thrives without you, that’s the real success.
The result? A stronger team, streamlined systems, and more time for what actually matters (strategy, growth, and YOUR life).
You’re not just a CEO. You’re a leader, and the best ones know that stepping back doesn’t mean losing control. It means building a business that works for you, not the other way around.
At the end of the day, a business is only as strong as its leader, which is why I'm so passionate about self-care, taking time off, and outsourcing tasks that don't bring you joy.
